Whether it’s the sparkling city lights, the dominating “dong” of church bells, or the continuously flowing Spanish wine, there’s something about Seville that puts a major pep in your step. Upon entering the main square, you’re immediately captivated by the city’s one-of-a-kind sights, sounds and tapas smells – and it only gets better from there.
I’m talking authentic flamenco dancing. Grand cathedrals. Moorish castles. Orange tree-lined streets. Sigh. Can I go back to Seville already?!
If you’re planning a trip through southern Spain, please pack me in your carry on here are seven top Seville sights you must check out!
- Alcazar of Seville: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alcazar of Seville is the only European palace that’s still in use. The Alcazar was designed by Moorish Muslim kings, and has ornate, Morrocan-esque décor on the inside, and a gorgeous maze of a garden on the outside.
- Seville Cathedral: The Seville Cathedral is one of the grandest sights in the country. Top to bottom, the enormous altar is covered in gold, and several winding-staircase stories up in the bell tower, you get an incredible aerial view of Seville’s hustling, bustling Plaza Virgen de los Reyes square.
- Ceramics Shopping in Triana: While downtown Seville has a variety of fashion, jewelry and souvenir shops, my favorite spot for shopping was Triana – a small neighborhood across the river from Seville filled with locally made ceramics. I spent way more than I should have (typical), but I still smile every time I see my ceramic souvenirs.
- Guadalquivir River Walk: To get over to Triana, you’ll have to cross the Guadalquivir river, so you might as well make the most of it. Stroll along the river at dusk for nighttime castle views, and stop at one of the riverside cafes or bars to sit back, sip up and take it all in. Just note, the bars get pretty crazy after hours, so plan your timing (and attire) accordingly.
- Museo del Baile Flamenco: Sure, you can see Flamenco dancing just about anywhere in Spain, but Seville offers one of the greatest spots of all: The Museo del Baile Flamenco (Flamenco Museum). While you don’t technically have to go through the entire museum, you can view a photographic history of Spain’s most popular dance in the ticketing waiting room. The show itself is wonderfully engaging, and had me singing and clapping all the way through Seville. (My brother was not amused…)
- Orange Trees: Like most city streets in Europe, Seville’s sidewalks are lined with lush green trees. But in Seville, these aren’t just any old tree. Oh no. They’re orange Everywhere! Unfortunately, the oranges are just for looks, and are way too sour to enjoy – a lesson I may I may or may not have learned the hard way … oops.
- Plaza de Espana: With a mini canal, gondola boats and colorful ceramic decorations, Plaza de Espana was by far my favorite spot in Seville. Investigate the bridges to uncover unusual ceramic combinations, navigate through the canals on boat, or simply enjoy the square’s bright nighttime lights– but whatever you do, don’t miss it!

Spain is much more than Madrid and Barcelona. In addition to Seville (which I obviously love!), small towns like Ronda, Cordoba and Toledo can even further connect you with Spain’s rich culture. So pack that suitcase (cough, don’t forget me, cough), map out your Spanish adventure and go enjoy a tapas-and-wine-filled trip of a lifetime!
