As our plane flew into Rome I was glued to the window in awe at the beautiful city sitting close to the coastline and full of ancient buildings, beautiful architecture and wondrous streets filled with pizza, pasta and of course gelato!

When I Was 15 (Left) And Now at 22 (Right)This is actually my second time back in Italy! In fact I have even visited Rome before back in 2009 when I was 15 years old! Although the difference is this time I want to be here (when I was young and ungrateful I didn’t appreciate the amazing trips my family took myself and my siblings on, Rome included!) And this time I am doing it all on my own in hand with my boyfriend of six years, Matt.
This post is going to be a little different to others, I’m going to take you into my time here and give you a breakdown of my days spent here in Rome and let you know everything there is to know so far!
When we first touched down in Rome it was 6:30am, we got to our hotel which like many other “hotels” in Rome that are not five star are more like guest houses or homestays where you have a room in an apartment that may have other guests in their as well but in their own rooms! You have a basic kitchen and shared bathroom, but the apartments are clean, cheap and very close to public transport (which is a must in Rome!).
After we had found our way on the local train line from the airport to the station closest to our “hotel” we checked in, dropped our bags off and hit the streets! This is by far the best way to see Rome and I strongly suggest you bring some good walking shoes as you will be walking almost everywhere unless you are on a private tour that may have a bus to take you around (don’t be one of those people, its so much better doing it on your own! Super easy and much more fun!)
After walking for 15 minutes we came across the beautiful Baths of Caracalla, we then ventured on and sussed out the town walking through and past the famous Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps (which were unfortunately under refurbishment) but still very beautiful to look at! and then decided to check out the range of different shops throughout the streets selling lots of yummy Italian foods such as pizza, pasta, sandwiches and gelato! If you are looking to eat out in Rome I strongly suggest walking further away from these monuments to get cheaper meals! The closer you are to the ancient artifacts the more likely you will be paying at least double for a meal! We packed our lunch and ate it in front of the Colosseum, which was just as good and then shared a fresh sandwich later in the afternoon.
We then did some shopping and walked through the beautiful streets! When the time came to go home we stumbled across the metro line A, which runs straight across the city and took us straight back to our apartment. There is also a metro B line that runs through the main station “Termini” and from here you can switch lines to go in different directions across the city! I do however strongly suggest walking because its such a pretty city to see! There are also buses you can catch, but the metro is the best way to go if you really don’t want to walk!
Rome so far had been pretty stunning! The weather is warm, the crowds are coming, but the city itself is fascinating!
